Honey: Ideas for Using this Sweet Treat
We love honey here at Shisler’s Cheese House! We’re really proud to stock Tonn’s Pure Clover Honey as well as Tonn’s Pure Clover Honeycomb. Fat-free and cholesterol free, clover honey has been found to contain vitamins and minerals that could reduce the risk of illness. Honey is 25% sweeter than table sugar, whilst being an all-natural sweetener. It is a source of flavonoids, which may reduce the risk of some cancers and heart disease. It’s also the only food that contains the antioxidant pinocembrin, which has been linked to improved brain function.
We’ve put together a list of ideas for using honey in your cooking, so read on to find out how to get more of this superfood into your life.
Salad Dressings with Honey
Honey is a great ingredient for adding sweetness to a salad. It pairs really well with mustard and vinegars to create flavorful salads. For a really simple dressing, mix extra virgin olive oil, honey, lemon, sea salt and black pepper together. Shake it up in a jam jar for super speedy mixing. It’s also easy to take it to work with your lunch or out to the park for a picnic!
Of course, if you don’t want to make your own then you could pick up our Walden Farms Honey Dijon Dressing. It’s even calorie free!
As a Marinade
Honey makes an excellent addition to marinades for all sorts of foods. Try it with garlic, lemon juice, brown sugar, and cayenne pepper with chicken. Mix it with soy sauce, garlic, chopped spring onions, and lime juice to add flavor to your salmon. You can even use it to glaze vegetables before roasting.
Make honey butter
Mix 8oz salted butter with 4 tablespoons of honey. Add 1.5 teaspoons of ground cinnamon and 0.5 teaspoons of ground ginger to make a spiced honey butter. These both work really well on toast, with brioche, or melted over pancakes. Why not whip up a batch and keep it in the fridge for those breakfasts that need a little extra sweetness?
Honey on your face!
So this isn’t a recipe exactly, but did you know that honey is great for your skin? It can help you with acne, dry skin and even blemishes. You can simply apply a teaspoon of honey to your face, leave it for 15 – 30 minutes and then wash it off with lukewarm water. You should notice the difference right away!
Sweeten tea
Honey is a great choice for sweetening tea as it adds a little bit of flavor along with sweetness. We especially like it in chai tea as it pairs well with the spices. It’s also great for soothing a sore throat!
Baking with honey
Whether it’s cookies, cakes, or breads, honey makes a great addition to your baking. It’s an excellent source of sweetness and can also create a delicious caramelization in your dishes when used well. Honey does not raise blood sugar levels as quickly as sugar and is sweeter so less can be used making it an excellent alternative.

Walnut Creek Pickles: Explore the Full Range
Sometimes we like to help you explore our ranges in more detail here on the blog. Today we are looking at Walnut Creek Pickles. Read on to find out all about the range and their many uses. We are a proud supplier of Walnut Creek foods and we think you’ll see why.
Walnut Creek Foods President, Mark Coblentz, told us: “Honesty and integrity have always been hallmarks of our company. Early on, one of my new customers received a three-cent credit from me. It convinced her that we were a company she wanted to do business with. She became a lifelong fan of Walnut Creek Cheese and a friend of the family. My first warehouse was a couple of refrigerated truck beds and a shed on my dad’s farm. In 1984, when more space became necessary, we built our first building in Walnut Creek, Ohio. We attached a retail store to it, primarily so I could justify having personnel to answer the phone for wholesale orders and pick-ups. Although the retail store began as an afterthought, it was the beginning of us becoming a team. In an interesting development, the retail exposure and knowledge of products needed to make retail successful were used to better serve our wholesale customers as well.”
Walnut Creek Pickles: Hot Eggs
Pickled Eggs are typically hard-boiled eggs that are cured in vinegar or brine. As with many foods, this was originally a way to preserve the food so that it could be eaten months later. Now, pickled eggs have become a favorite among many as a snack or hors d’œuvre. The shell is removed from the hard-boiled egg and they are submerged in a solution of vinegar, salt, spices, and other seasonings. Recipes vary from the traditional brine solution for pickles to other solutions, which can impart a sweet or spicy taste. For these Hot Pickled Eggs, they have spice added that certainly has a kick to it!
Walnut Creek Pickles: Beet Eggs
We also stock delicious Beet Eggs, which have a wonderful pink color to them and an excellent flavor. Serve these alongside a cheeseboard, crackers, or crudites.
Walnut Creek Pickles: Hot Pickled Garlic
Hot Pickled Garlic is an Amish classic and ours is from the heart of Ohio’s Amish Country Walnut Creek. It is delicious as part of a salad dressing or served alongside other pickles.
Walnut Creek Pickles: Baby Beets
These beets are flavored with a touch of cinnamon and spices and make a delicious healthy snack or side dish with salads. Use the juice to make a batch of delicious pickled red beet eggs.
Hot Pepper Jelly
A sweet and spicy jelly, perfect with cheese and crackers. You could also stir it into sauces and dressings to add a spicy kick.
If pickles aren’t your thing at all, then Walnut Creek also makes a delicious Amish peanut butter spread. It’s perfect for sandwiches, spreading on pancakes or mixing into your baking!

Mustard: Our Favorites
Today we are exploring the world of mustard. Read on to find out more about how it is made and the great range that we have on offer for you to enjoy at Shisler’s Cheese House.
How is it made?
It is made from the seeds of the mustard plant. These are used whole, ground, cracked or slightly bruised. They are then mixed with a variety of liquids including vinegar, salt, and other flavorings or spices to create the delicious condiment that we know and love. The combination of ingredients is what helps them to range from sweet to spicy.
Are there any health benefits?
There is some evidence to show that the seeds could inhibit cancer cells, so you might well be improving your health when you spread some on a sandwich.
A whole range of different mustards
We know that each different occasion calls for a different condiment, which is why we stock a variety of options for you to try.
Bertman Ballpark Mustard is a classic spicy brown sauce. Of course, we recommend enjoying it with a hot dog.
Herlocher’s Dipping Mustard is sweet and tangy: perfect for dipping pretzels into it.
Try our own Shisler’s Private Label Sweet Mustard with ham, sausages, or in a sandwich.
For those who love spice, we created the Shisler’s Private Label Hot Jalapeno Mustard. This is a great accompaniment to creamy cheeses and pickles.
If you like to use lots of garlic in your cooking, then try the Shisler’s Private Label Roasted Garlic Mustard. This is great for stirring into sauces for an extra kick of flavor.
Dick’s Homemade Horseradish Mustard is made right here in Ohio. Eat it with hot dogs or hamburgers for that authentic flavor.
If you can’t get enough, then try our honey mustard pretzels. They make a great snack for movie night.
You’ll also find some along with some delicious treats to eat it with all wrapped up in our Football Season Special.
Tips for using mustard
- Add a spoonful to your cheese sauce. It will give that extra zing to your mac and cheese.
- Create a quick salad dressing with mustard, oil, honey, and vinegar.
- Make a glaze for ham or chicken by mixing it with brown sugar. Add it in the last hour of cooking for caramelization.
- Mix it with mayo. It’ll add an extra kick and you’ll love dipping fries in.
- Spice up potatoes. Add a little to scalloped potatoes or mash and you’re sure to have friends asking for the recipe.
- Add it to breakfast. A small amount can make breakfast potatoes extra exciting and they’ll be perfect to eat with sausages. You can even mix it into beans for added heat.
- Put it in your side veg. Sometimes sides don’t seem that exciting. Add a spoonful to cabbage or broccoli to bring some fun to the table.
- Stir it into your soup as it finishes cooking. You’ll definitely get flavor with your veggies then!

Barbecue season is here: grab our checklist
Barbecue season is upon us, so it’s time to prepare! We often find that at the beginning of the summer it’s a bit of a scramble to get everything you need together for a barbecue.
Let us help you out with our quick checklist.
- Meat!
This is the one thing you’re not likely to forget. Try to get the best quality meat that you can. If you haven’t tried making homemade burgers before, give it a go. Otherwise, you can’t go wrong with burgers and hot dogs from the butcher. For something really special, grab some steaks. If you want to inject plenty of flavor, then chicken wings and thighs take on marinades really well.
- Veggies
It’s great to get some vegetables on your plate and this will mean you have something to serve vegetarian guests. Eggplant, zucchini and squash all cook well on the barbecue. Large mushrooms and tomatoes on the vine can work well too. You can always parcel up veggies in foil and then place them on the barbecue if they might slip through.
- Bread
Hot dog and burger buns are essential for carrying all of that delicious meat. You might want to bake a quick loaf to serve with cheeses and salads, but no-one will turn down a store-bought sesame bun!
- Salads
A simple green salad will go a long way as it can be eaten on the side or even in your burger. A caprese is a great salad for serving at barbecues as the flavors of tomato and mozzarella go so well together and will develop throughout the day. Whip up a potato salad and you’ve got a perfect selection to serve to your guests.
Don’t forget to add salad dressings to the table. We recommend letting your guests dress their own salad so that they can pick their favorite dressings and the leaves will stay crisp.
- The extras!
A barbecue is really made special because of all the extra touches.
Cheese is essential. The classics are a slice of Cheddar or American Cheese, but Blue Cheese and Swiss are also delicious melted onto burgers. You could also put cheese onto the barbecue. Halloumi is a particularly good option as it won’t melt and has a lovely, salty taste. Definitely stock up or even have a go at making your own.
Make sure you’re stocked up on sauces such as ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard and, of course, barbecue.
- Drinks
Beer is the classic, but there are plenty of refreshing summer drinks. Mix up a jug of something cool for designated drivers and pop a bottle of champagne in the fridge if it’s a special occasion.

10 Uses for Jams and Jellies
Whether you love trying different jams and jellies, or you have made lots yourself, sometimes you need to find a way to use some up. Especially at this time of year, when you’ll be thinking about making new jams with all of the lovely summer fruit.
Read on to find out some of our tips and tricks for using up jams and jellies.
- Cakes
You don’t always have to use strawberry or raspberry jam to sandwich cakes together. Try out different flavor combinations and find your favorites.
- Gravy
This might sound a little odd, but trust us: it’s delicious. A little sweetness can go a long way to turning a good gravy into a great gravy. Add a teaspoon at a time and keep tasting; you don’t want to overpower it.
3. Yogurt
Stir jams and jellies into plain yogurt to create a delicious and easy dessert. It’s perfect for when you’re craving something sweet but you don’t want to leave the house.
4. Salad Dressings
Sometimes you might add a little sugar or honey to a salad dressing for sweetness. Try jam instead! Make sure you taste it before pouring it over your salad to make sure that you’ve got the flavors right. A great tip is to take a leaf or veggie from your salad and dip it into the dressing to taste. This way you get to try the flavors together, instead of tasting dressing on its own.
5. Grilled Cheese
We’ve mentioned this before, but jam or jelly can take your grilled cheese to the next level. We especially love this with cheeses like ricotta or mascarpone, but hard cheeses like gouda work well with fruit as well.
6. Barbecue
As the weather warms up and you start to think about cooking on the barbecue, try using jelly as a glaze for meats. Mix your jelly with a little water and heat over a low heat until it is a brushable glaze. Then simply brush it onto the meat.
7. Cocktails
Any cocktail that is shaken can have a spoonful of jam added to it. We especially love apricot jam in a mojito, but this is definitely something to experiment with. Make sure that you give everything a good shake before serving.
8. Pancakes
Pop jams and jellies on the table when you’re serving pancakes and watch them get eaten up! This is especially good with whipped cream.
9. Oatmeal
Oatmeal with a dollop of jam on top is a true joy. Try different flavors to find your favorite. You’ll never have a boring bowl for breakfast again.
10. Biscuits
Sandwich biscuits together with jam or even add a little to the batter to create an added sweetness. This is a quick and easy way to add excitement to your baking. It’s also a fun way to get the kids involved in the kitchen!
We hope you’ve enjoyed our list. If you need some jam or jelly to try out these ideas, we’ve got you covered. Which will you try? Let us know in the comments!
